SINGAPORE: A total of 690 Government-funded buses have been added to Singapore roads under the Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP).

Seven more new routes will also be introduced to enhance connectivity in areas such as Bedok, Bukit Panjang, Choa Chu Kang, Jurong East, Jurong West, Marine Parade, Punggol, Sembawang, Tampines and Yishun. More details will be announced closer to their implementation dates, according to the press release. This will benefit executive condo residents such as those from The Terrace EC in Punggol, Brownstone EC ,Visionaire EC , Parc Life EC in Sembawang and Signature At Yishun EC in Yishun.

This figure is close to 70 per cent of the BSEP improvements planned, the Land Transport Authority (LTA), SBS Transit and SMRT said in a joint release on Friday (Oct 9).The BSEP was started in September 2012, with the aims of introducing 1,000 government-funded buses by 2017 and expanding the public bus fleet by about 35 per cent.

A total of 450 weekly bus trips have also been added, in a bid to reduce crowding and shorten wait times. According to the press release, this has led to “significant improvements” in their frequencies.

NEW BUS SERVICES & ROUTES TO BE ADDED

In September, four new bus services (SBS Transit Service 102 and City Direct Services CDS 661, 662 and 663) were implemented, bringing the total number of new or amended services under the enhancement programme to 45, the operators said in the press release.

Another two City Direct Services, CDS 664 and 665 will also be introduced in Tampines/Simei and Marsiling/Woodlands.

A Bus Service Reliability Framework (BSRF) trial conducted from December 2014 to May 2015 has shown that the improvements have led to more regular wait times and less crowding on buses. In all, 17 out of 22 services reduced their Excess Wait Time, defined as the average additional waiting time experienced by commuters at bus stops over the expected waiting time.

For improvements to their services, SBS Transit earned S$816,000 for reliability improvements to 12 services, and SMRT earned $384,000 for improvements to five services.
