*LIFE IS MEANINGFUL WHEN WE LIVE FOR THE INTEREST OF OTHERS*

As Buddhist practitioners, we have to understand the doctrine of impermanence and letting go. A meaningful life is a life lived for the interest of others. With the unceasing natural and man-made disasters around us, how can we avoid and deliver others from these adverse events? It is none other than through the power of Buddhism practice as it can help us eliminate impending calamities and difficulties .

*IF YOU ARE ILL, DO PRAY FOR GOOD HEALTH*

Female Listener :  We know that it is best that we do not wish for anything.  However, there are some with serious illnesses, and with the same understanding, they refuse to make any wish for their recovery, continuing to participate in Dharma propagation.  Is this right?

Master Lu:  It is not right. This is considered as “Clinging to wrong view”.  Do you think Bodhisattva would want us to be stricken by ill-health?  A better health is for the betterment of your Dharma propagation. As such, a wish like this is neither selfish nor greedy.

Our bodies are given by our parents.  Hence, taking care of our bodies is an act of filial piety.  If we neglect our health, it is an act of impiety! Isn't filial piety something that Bodhisattva preaches?  If you choose not to pray for good health, and your body continues to deteriorate, do you think Bodhisattva will be pleased?  Guan Yin Bodhisattva is the “Saviour of all sufferings and calamities”, and our health too is included in this context.

You assume that you would attain a higher state by not praying for good health? No. It is regarded as “Clinging to wrong views”.

*HOW DOES ONE’S MINDSET DETERMINE THEIR DESTINY?*

Question: We always say that one’s mindset determines their destiny. How do we explain this from a Buddhist perspective? Please enlighten us, Master Lu.

Answer: A person’s mindset is very important. A negative mindset that holds jealousy, hatred, unforgiveness, and self-righteousness will never be likeable and no one will ever be nice to them. Such a person will not have a smooth career and will be in frequent fights with their partner. How could such a person ever be successful in life?

*DO NOT THINK LIGHTLY OF THE LITTLE GOOD DEEDS*

Master Jun Hong Lu, “Do not think lightly of the little good deeds that seem insignificant because even by the falling of water drops, a water pot is filled; a man becomes full of good, even if he gathers it little by little.”

*GUAN YIN HALL IS OUR “HOME”*

In this world that we live in, learning to emancipate ourselves spiritually is of the utmost importance. In relation to this, the opening of a Guan Yin Hall is to provide us with a “home”. The Guan Yin Hall we have today can be compared to the spiritual abode during the age of Lord Buddha; it is a place for worship that is rooted in each and every one of our hearts and that of sentient beings’. Should we feel unhappy or sad at home, or have something to pray for; make a trip to the Guan Yin Hall, perform your recitation conscientiously and pray for the protection of Bodhisattva.

*THE REASON BEHIND GAMING ADDICTION; DO NOT DO ANYTHING IN EXCESS*

Caller: At the beginning of this year, gaming addiction has been classified as a mental health condition by the World Health Organization. The symptoms of gaming addiction include impaired control over the gaming activities; where the frequency and intensity of gaming are also taken into consideration. Master Lu, what is the reason behind such an addiction? From a Buddhist perspective, is the addiction caused by foreign spirits on one’s body or are there any other reasons?

Master Jun Hong Lu: The habits of any person are due to his clinging to the pursuit of a particular matter. In the dharma realm, this is known as desire. Indulgence in debauchery shows possession by your evil nature. As such, if you develop a special liking for a lady, haven’t you been possessed by a sex demon? Hence, if you obsess over your computer as though it were your lover, don't you think you are being possessed by it?

Caller: Master Lu, by ‘demon’, are you referring to our inner demons instead of foreign spirits?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes, these are instances of your inner demons. For example, a 28 year old youth recently passed away while watching a football match. He was extremely stimulated; shouting, drinking and not sleeping — this is called fantasy football or something along that line. Ultimately, the cause of his death was unidentified. Think about it, aren’t people pitiful? This is why Bodhisattva said moderation is key in all our undertakings, refrain from being attached and not to go overboard, as anything done in excess will cause harm to the human body. Being overly fond of someone will lead to separation; and arguing excessively will also culminate similarly. That which is long divided must unify, and that which is long unified must divide. That is how it is.

*DESIRE WILL ONLY LEAD US TO SUFFERING*

We must understand that our desires should never be taken for our hopes in life. There are many who have yearnings all their lives: “I want a television, I want a car, I want a house, I want….”. These are all desires which should never be taken as goals in life, because unfulfilled desires will lead us to sufferings. When a person has incessant desires in life and fails to attain what he has been longing for, he will experience extreme sufferings. That is when all hopes are lost in life.

*WORDS OF WISDOM*

Master Jun Hong Lu:
[BLACK SUN WITH RAYS]️Do not overthink, otherwise it will be difficult for us to be clear-headed;
[emoji295]Do not speak irrevocably, otherwise it will be difficult for us to compromise;
[emoji295]Do not set our pitch too high, otherwise it will be difficult for us to harmonise;
[emoji295]Do not be too extreme in our approach, otherwise it will be difficult for us to advance or retreat;
[emoji295]Do not love too deeply, otherwise it will be difficult for us to extricate ourselves;
[emoji295]Do not be deceptive in life, otherwise it will be difficult for us to open our heart to others;
[emoji295]Do not take worldly gains too seriously, otherwise it will be difficult for us to be sensible.

*STRIVE TO CREATE OUR OWN OPPORTUNITIES*

Master Jun Hong Lu: Do not impute all faults and wrongs on others as our fate and destiny is in our very own hands. When opportunity presents itself to us, do not hesitate to forge ahead vigorously and advance. Do not be jealous when you see the success of others as their achievement is the result of their dedication to progress and hard work. When opportunity knocks, break new paths!; if it doesn't, strive to create your own.

Given the right conditions, with the ideal spiritual foundation, we should dedicate ourselves to progress and may we fall into the arms of Guan Yin Bodhisattva hereafter; lacking of such circumstances calls for our sincere repentance, through our conscientious recitation of the _Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance_. We should desperately strive to acccomplish our spiritual cultivation within this lifetime; and with this life that we have gained, we should make every effort in order to eventually fall back into the arms of our “Mother”.

*HOW TO ELIMINATE THE HATRED IN OUR EIGHTH CONSCIOUSNESS*

Caller: Master said that, once there's hatred in you, it will enter your Eighth Consciousness. There's a question - if the hatred has subsequently been forgotten, will it still remain in the Eighth Consciousness?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It should not. Once the hatred has been forgotten, when you are free of any grudges, and in addition, if all these are attained through the recitation of
_Eighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance_, then it is considered to have gone clean out of your mind. Without the support from the recitation of the said mantra, though you may claim that it has been forgotten, there is a high chance that you will recall the hatred at some point later.

Caller: I understand it now. Thank you Master Lu for answering my question.
