They are the natural upper class in the society and will avoid military service. Same applies to taiwan, those who can afford it, will escape military service by having dual citizenship.

In the end is the poor or less resourceful or personal constraints who must do the military thing. They are probably the ones who are being manipulated to fight in the street protest. But face the fact, do you really expect them to be in the military to face PRC armies or others ?!

That's my personal view.

I had talked to a socialist, from Bell-Lab (surprised?  Big Grin), who was doing a research on Singapore post-graduate students, on similar topic. He was saying, people behave differently, under stress, e.g. people are socializing more, under the stress of hectic schedule. I reckon, the same will apply to cory's scenario. During war-time, the youths might behave very different from our expectation.

China is already starting to encroach on out SEA territories, no way HK ppl can get independence. Its just those marginalise ppl who are unhappy with things in HK making noise.

Those rich buggers who could afford already migrated overseas before the famous '97 british handover, there was a big exodus back then. That's why the best HK "yumcha" is in Vancouver, not in HK, all the old school SIFU went there liao.

By 2047 when the 50 year self-rule is up, there will likely be more mainland Chinese than HKers in HK. By then HK probably will be another Chinese tier one city. I'm not sure if it will be the financial center of China like NY to US, but maybe more like Chicago

China is patient as long as people don't gao-gao-zhen (Cantonese)

If I am a mainlander I would park funds offshore in Singapore than in HK. It is obvious that HK is for transactional purpose and offshore Singapore or elsewhere is for wealth purpose

China only has 2 tenants in foreign policy: patience and self-serving, be it Angola or spratly. If they have a choice they can't be bothered to join UN peacekeeping troops
