MH17 crash: Pressure grows on Russia over crash inquiry.

Western countries have demanded that Russia put pressure on Ukrainian rebels to allow unhindered access to the site of Thursday's Malaysia Airlines crash.

Dutch PM Mark Rutte said he had told Russian President Vladimir Putin that time was "running out" to show he could help. Most crash victims were Dutch.

The US and Britain also told Russia full access to the area was needed.

International observers have had their movements restricted by pro-Russia militiamen who control the crash site.

Both Ukraine and the pro-Russian rebels have accused each other of shooting down the Boeing 777, which was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.

Flight MH17 was reportedly hit by a missile over a rebel-held area in Donetsk region on Thursday. All 298 people on board died.

The new film reveals that a secret Malaysian military operation took custody of the MH17 black boxes on July 22, preventing the US and Ukraine from seizing them.  

“I talked to my prime minister [Najib],” Colonel Sakri says. “He directed me to go to the crash site immediately.” At the time Sakri was a senior security official at the Disaster Management Division of the Prime Minister’s Department.

Sakri says that after arriving in Kiev, Poroshenko’s officials blocked the Malaysians. “We were not allowed to go there…so I took a small team to leave Kiev going to Donetsk secretly.” There Sakri toured the crash site, and met with officials of the Donetsk separatist administration headed by Alexander Borodai.

With eleven men, including two medical specialists, a signalman, and Malaysian Army commandos, Sakri had raced to the site ahead of an armed convoy of Australian, Dutch and Ukrainian government men.

Sakri goes on to say he was asked by the OSCE’s special monitoring mission for Ukraine to hand over the black boxes; he refused. He was then met by agents of the FBI (Min 6:56). “They approached me to show them the black box. I said no.” He also reports that in Kiev the Ukrainian Government tried “forcing me to leave the black boxes with them. We said no. We cannot. We cannot allow.”

I wonder why SIA still choose to code share with Malaysia Airline, despite all the fear lingering about the safety of the company. It will be a horror if I pay for SIA, then end up boarding MAS.

It's damaging to the SIA brand. Anyone raise this during the AGM?

In the context of MH17 kenna shot down, actually there wasn't much difference in the "safety" between SIA and Malaysia Airline.

IIRC, a few warnings were flashed and certain airlines did rerouted to avoid Ukraine's airspace. But SIA and Msia Airline were one of the many who didn't. This was still the days when oil price was hovering in the 100usd plus for past few years before it started its decline.
