One more major player in retail business. I am glad that it is directly competing with Courts, Giants and Ikea, but not Sheng Siong...Big Grin

Huge retail store Big Box set to open in Singapore

Singapore's largest retail warehouse store Big Box is set to open its doors in the fourth quarter of this year.

The eight-storey complex adjacent to the Jurong East MRT is 80 per cent complete, spans 5.6 hectares of land and will have approximately 1.3 million square feet.

When it commences operations, Big Box will be the largest and last of four warehouse retail projects approved under the government's Warehouse Retail Scheme. The other three stores - Ikea, Giant and Courts are in Tampines.

In a media briefing to unveil the project's concept and artists impression, Big Box's chief executive officer Wong Ah Long said construction was moving on well and the entire complex is expected to receive the Temporary Occupation Permit by August this year.

"Unlike most other malls which function as landlords with tenant retailers, Big Box will have a single vendor who will seek to increase retail volumes and pass on cost savings to shoppers," he said.

Big Box is 51 per cent owned by Singapore-listed TT International while the rest is held by two Singapore shareholders - Utraco Investment (30.4 per cent) and Prima BB (18.6 per cent).

The project which is hoped will transform the retail experience in Singapore's Western region will have a hypermarket, consumer electronics, IT and mobile accessories, home furnishings and food and beverage outlets.

Its too little too late for TT's Big Box concept store now.
Which shops would come in and compete with the surround shops?

Labour costs kills...
