Micro 3D printer smashes Kickstarter goal

LONDON – A Kickstarter campaign to raise US$50,000 (S$62,450) for the development of a US$200 3D printer has smashed its funding target, raising more than US$1 million, the Telegraph reported.

The 3D printer, known as the Micro, reached its target just 11 minutes after launching on crowd-funding site Kickstarter on Tuesday. Claiming to be the first ‘truly consumer’ 3D printer, the Micro comes ready to use out of the box, and can print objects as tall as 4.6 inches.

The Micro supports many different materials, including ABS, PLA, nylon, chameleon, as well as M3D’s micro filament spools or standard 1.75 mm filament spools available on the market. It is compatible with Mac and PC and Linux through a direct USB-connection.

“The mainstream consumer is eager to try 3D printing, patiently waiting for a truly affordable printer that comes with intuitive software,” said Mr Michael Armani, founder of M3D, which designed the Micro.

“For the first time, consumers, designers, and engineers alike can experiment with new ideas. They can customise and fix things around the house, print artistic models shared by others, and make technical prototypes.”

While the Micro can use open source software, M3D has also created its own software for less experienced users. The software is touchscreen-capable, making it easy for users to search for 3D models online and download them into a library.

The Micro is also power efficient, using roughly the same amount of power as a tablet, according to co-founder David Jones.

“We are so humbled, thrilled, and honoured to be able to connect with so many supporters through this modern medium, the M3D team said in an update on the Kickstarter website.

“By helping us create a new category of consumer product, a full user experience, and an innovative new brand with us, your feedback means that we can bring 3D printing to everyone.”
