Another possibility is an increase in vehicle inspection fee. From sgyounginvestor's blog, the last increase was in 2006. It seems timely for the next increase.

CDG via Vicom earns fees from affixing and inspecting the Private Hire decals. Not a bad business actually.

There are no inspection for PHV for the first 3 years unlike the taxis, which have a inspection schedule every 6 months.

There are around 40000 PHVs on the road which may translate to S$4-5 million of annual revenue.
These PHVs have relatively high mileage which, retrospectively speaking, need a more frequent inspection.

In this kind of cutthroat battle, every cent counts.

Agree and good points. It's reasonable to request regulators to level the playing field. The licensing of PHV is already the first step

Value Penguin has done a very good price comparison between Grab, Uber and ordinary Taxi. As it can be seen the taxi fare structure is darn expensive compared to the other 2. On rides to and fro usual Singapore places, Uber and Grab is beating Taxis hands down. This is worsened when places such as Changi Airport has taxi surcharges. It is worth noting Value Penguin's calculations exclude the weekly carrots dangled by Grab.

So if Cabbies have to lower revenue to compete, its either lower pay as a taxi driver or their cost has to be managed.

For my limited experience, I have compared the fare from my home to Chinatown and to airport (I have travel to these 2 places many times). There is no significant difference in pricing. During rush hour, with 25% surcharge for taxi, I notice Grab pricing went up as well, perhaps coincide with surge pricing. Uber always cost more than Grab. As I did not take midnight trips I have no data for comparison between 3 of them. The $44 taxi fare from Woodlands to Changi airport doesn't seem correct.

^^ I concur but didn't want to be first to point it out Smile I work in Raffles Place and it doesn't sound right to me either. I don't think it is "very good price comparison" Smile

I think the better methodology is that they take a cab and screen shot the Uber and Grab at the same time rather than hypothetical

"In order to calculate how each ride costs for Uber, Grab and conventional taxis, we collected data on each service's pricing mechanisms. Then, we selected a few landmark locations in major neighborhoods of Singapore: CBD (Raffles Place & Tanjong Pagar Centre), Woodlands Train Station, Jurong West Swimming Complex, Hougang Mall, Bedok Mall and Changi Airport. By calculating the distance and time required to travel between these places, we were able to estimate the cost for all of the services we were studying. We also used fare estimators to check our estimations were in the ball-park of what the companies were claiming to cost. For our trips, we assume no toll or additional surcharges."

Yes specuvestor. Used an online search to estimate and the cost on taxi from woodlands to airport including surcharge is only about $31

Hi CY09

No offense Big Grin just that looking at the numbers it doesn't fit observation (occupational hazard)

Grab pricing changes every 5 minutes or less depending on demand and time of day. My guesstimate is that on average it fluctuates 20% plus minus taxi fare excluding promotion and surcharge. Cost of PHV also include 20% paid to Grab on top of car rental etc.

I seriously think if CD cut rental by 20% and remove surcharges, the dynamics will change significantly. But shareholders will have to grind it through

Does anyone know if CDG has a fixed quota to get a number of new COEs and call bookings every year?

It makes a lot of difference if you are stuck in a traffic jam.
I was once stuck in Terminal 2 traffic jam close to midnight and I chose to take Uber.
It cost me $15 only and the trip last from 1148pm to 130am.

I think it would be close to $50 if I took a cab Tongue
