Yup I agree that the survey could be more well structured.

Maybe we should ask

1) which stock have you held the longest period, how long and why?
2) which stock have you held the shortest period, how short and why?

Hi Felix,

Appreciate your constructive suggestion. Will be more specific to structure the questions to avoid confusion to fellow forumers in future.

Notice that Valuebuddies forum is more skewed towards long-term investing based on the survey result todate as I had also conducted a similar survey in other forum in June this year.

Thank you for sharing the valuable pointers in your stockpicking criteria.

I sometimes do short term trades too, example subscribe for ipo and dump on first day. So holding period can be anything from
One day to a few years.

Hi starcraft_76 & all forumers,

Last option is indeed "More than 6 YEARS".

I can't change survey question after 1st participant voted the choice. Huh

I have changed the poll as wished. Edit allowed only within a specific period for normal user, IIRC

1) which stock have you held the Longest period, how long and Why?

For me, Van Der Horst was my LONGEST Holding stock for 7 years, whereby I lost almost 98% of stock value which is about $1,600 as I was unwilling to cut loss since I acquired the stock near the peak of 1997.

Current Longest holding stock is Wing Tai for slightly more than 1 year as I acquired at high margin of safety & the company is fundamentally strong.

2) which stock have you held the Shortest period, how short and Why?

My shortest holding period was 2 days for Keppel Corp in 2009 because of trader instinct, treating stock as lottery ticket till 2012. Sad

However, I have realised my mistake to treat the stock as my business partner after being "brainwashed" constantly by my mentor. Glad to share that I was able to emerge above the water level even though the STI is range bound now. Shy

Miles to emulate from the value investing experts in this forum. Idea

It is encouraging to learn that value investing works, judging by the investment (11.03% to as high as 32% return) results posted by fellow forumers in another thread:IdeaRolleyes

I only manage to attain 6% return, inclusive of dividends for 2013, still need to work harder on my emotional psychology to develop the patience to hold my portfolio for longer duration so as to achieve my financial freedom goal.Sad

However, I think there is a possibility that a minority of the forumers only achieve mediocre portfolio performance who are still too shy to reveal in black and white on the forum.Undecided

Based on the survey result I conducted in another forum,

25% are LOSING MONEY
50% attain investment gain of 0.1 to 10%

6% attain investment gain of >10 to 20%
6% attain investment gain of >20 to 30%
13% attain investment gain of >30%

- Folks who bought late into the REIT rally and got blindsided by Helicopter Ben in late May.

- Instititutional/retail investors and brokerages who got burnt in the penny stock saga.

- People who are holding gold.
