Once again, I'm going to be a student for my teacher many years ago.
一日之师 终身为父
Gratitude....
+++++++++++++++
I am always very technical.
I'm very good in RDBMS and I studied computer science in NUS.
My DBMS lecturer was Dr KP Tan (now become Prof KP Tan).
Before every lesson, I noticed that he always rush into the lecture hall.
You know ...【匆匆忙忙】.
So, out of concern, I approached and talked to him.
"Ai Yo. I need to typeset your lecture notes and then print out as transparency. Very last minute, the machine always jam." Dr Tan said.
You see, those were the time that MS word had not invented.
Most lecturer will write onto transparency and project out onto screen. (yes, already phased out chalk...which is bad for teacher health)
Dr Tan choose to typeset into nice fonts project instead of hand-writing.
"No problem, I can help you to typeset. Just gives me the materials." I volunteered. I like DBMS and I like to learn everything.
So, Dr Tan can come into the lecturer hall, take a breather to set up the projector and starts our class happily.
++++++++++++++++++++
One day, Dr Tan asked me whether I wanted to earn some extra $$$.
"Yes. Of course." I'm exhilarated.
"Well, I am writing a paper on Grid Sort algorithm. I'll need your help to write programs to confirm that my theory is correct." Dr Tan explained.
"You'll be my research assistance." Dr Tan smiled.
My job is very simple.
1. Understand what is Grid Sort algorithm
2. Learn Unix, learn C programming
3. Develop a test strategy with sufficient permutation to confirm the theory is correct.
Being a NUS research assistance has a advantage too.
I'm given the fastest unix computer with tons of disk space, cpu and memory quota.
No problem at all.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Few months later, Dr Tan asked me again whether I wanted to earn more $$$.
"Yes, of course!" I exhilarated (x2)
This time round, Dr Tan has a master student doing his master program by thesis. This guy is a manager from a local IT company
and he wanted someone to help him to type/typeset his thesis.
As I'm a research assistance, I'm access to all the computer, printer, papers etc.
Every page that I produce will earn me $1.
++++++++++++++++++++++++
Forever in debt to Dr Tan.
Very soon, I'm going to be his student again...
