Chinese plans for 2nd free trade zone

A PROPOSED Pearl River Delta free trade zone (FTZ) incorporating parts of Guangdong province, Hong Kong and Macau will aim to decentralise government powers, slash red tape and liberalise trade in services.

Amid talk that the region will be the second after Shanghai to be granted the coveted FTZ status, Guangdong governor Zhu Xiaodan said yesterday that a "feasible" action plan is being drawn up with input from national ministries, after which it will be submitted to the State Council - the country's Cabinet - for approval.

Guangdong, along with cities like Tianjin and Chongqing, has been jockeying for this prize, in a race that has gained prominence since the Communist Party leadership said in its post-plenum reform blueprint last Friday that it wants to "accelerate the establishment of FTZs".

Analysts believe that Guangdong has an edge, given that Beijing wants to see the economies of Hong Kong and Macau further integrated with that of the mainland.

Nansha or Hengqin. Hengqin too close to Macau. SZ already have Qianhai.

Likely to be Nansha. Been that before. Took >1hr MRT ride from GZ. 鸟不生蛋 place. But Nansha has a periodic ferry to HK.
