China home prices rise last month, deepen policy dilemma

BEIJING – Prices of new homes in China rose last month in all but one city, led by the biggest metropolitan centres, underscoring Premier Li Keqiang’s struggle to rein in speculative investment even as Asia’s largest economy cools.

Prices climbed in 69 of the 70 cities the government tracked last month from June a year earlier, the National Bureau of Statistics said yesterday. The southern commercial hub of Guangzhou posted the biggest increase with a 16-per-cent advance from a year earlier while prices climbed 13 per cent in the capital Beijing and 12 per cent in the financial centre of Shanghai.
