I don't think Watson has a superior AI as what is being written to sound like this.

Both google now and siri could have possibly provided the answers to the queries.

From being a chess master to an artificial intelligence being capable of understanding complex queries in a few years.. That seems a bit of a big stretch imo.

Watson and Siri comparison? I am not so sure they are comparable. The Watson is more than just an AI to understand queries.

IBM sales is an indicator for global corporate capital expense...

IBM posts 4 percent drop in quarterly revenue, shares slump

International Business Machines Corp reported a 4 percent drop in quarterly revenue as client activity slowed in September, sending its shares down sharply in premarket trade.

Total revenue fell to $22.4 billion in the third quarter ended Sept. 30 from $23.34 billion a year earlier.

Analysts had expected revenue of $23.37 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The world's largest technology services company's net profit from continuing operations fell to $3.46 billion, or $3.46 per share, from $4.14 billion, or $3.77 per share in the same quarter last year.

On an adjusted basis, the company earned $3.68 per share, missing the average analyst estimate of $4.31 per share.

"We are disappointed in our performance," Chief Executive Ginni Rometty said in a statement.

"We saw a marked slowdown in September in client buying behavior, and our results also point to the unprecedented pace of change in our industry," she said.

IBM's shares were down 7.3 percent at $168.73

IBM is a BUSINESS SERVICES company.

1. IBM is TRYING TO BE a software-oriented company, like SAP, Oracle, EMC. No software company has succeeded in becoming a services company. No IT services
company has succeeded in becoming a software company.

HP is struggling with its enterprise services strategy too. And everyone from Infosys to Dell is emulate IBM to be a business services company

2. Cloud computing has made the large software deals become a rarity now. Instead of S$20-$50M software deal for the likes of MINDEF, SIA or PETRONAS, companies now buy usage... based on transactions over 3-5 years.

I don't think Warren Buffet realised the huge upheaval in the IT software & services industry.

Was lucky to have sold my share 1 week before the results. That's very lucky...

I share some of your view.

I agree that there is an unstoppable trend of software company to software service company, with the enabling technology of Cloud computing. Major software companies are moving in this direction. Microsoft has started the cloud-base service subscription model. I have subscribed to that, and so far as good.

"No software company has succeeded in becoming a services company"? I am not so sure. One of the success case study for the trend is Adobe.

By a services company, I mean a company capable of selling ENTERPRISE BUSINESS-IT SERVICES wall-to-wall. Not the niche based solution.

IBM signs $1.25 billion WPP cloud deal and says more coming

LONDON - IBM is enjoying a wave of major technology outsourcing deals from European customers in the fourth quarter and the new contract signings are not over yet, an executive for the computer sciences giant said in an interview.

Late on Tuesday, IBM announced the third in a string of billion dollar plus contracts, saying it had won a seven-year, $1.25 billion deal with WPP, the world's top advertising firm, to run WPP operations in the cloud.

On Monday, IBM disclosed a multi-billion dollar deal to provide computer infrastructure services to Dutch bank ABN Amro. And last month, Lufthansa agreed a $1.25 billion contract for IBM to take over the German airline's information technology operations and staff.

Bart Van den Daele, IBM's general manager for strategic outsourcing in Europe, said big contract signings slowed in the depths of the euro crisis but that the region's customers are ready to play catch-up.

"(There's) a new wave of big deals which is still continuing and we see it going forward," Van den Daele said in a phone interview. "Now you see the first results with Lufthansa, ABN Amro and WPP and there will be others."

A win-win deal for both IBM, and Apple. With the growing corporate trend of BYOD, and Apple penetration into corporate market. Blackberry management should worry over the deal...

First wave of IBM MobileFirst for iOS Apps launched

SINGAPORE — Apple and IBM today (Dec 10) announced the launch of the first group of apps geared towards enterprises, borne out of their partnership.

The first round of 10 apps are expected to “bring IBM’s big data and analytics capabilities to iPhone and iPad users in the enterprise,” according to IBM, and include a mixture of applications aimed at financial institutions, the banking and retail sectors and government agencies among others.

Called IBM MobileFirst, the iOS solutions are designed to strengthen the role of the iPhone and iPad for use in large-scale business applications.

According to IBM, the apps can be customised for any organisation and easily deployed, managed and upgraded via cloud services from IBM – that are specifically for iOs devices. This ensures security across the data, app and device.

At the moment, the apps are clearly focused on specific industries, though IBM says additional apps are continuously being designed and developed.
