Read and learn first about businesses and how to value them. You should not be in a hurry to invest your money as it is better to equip yourself with knowledge and the proper mindset before putting your money to work.

Agree with musicwhiz. If you are not yet comfortable with the concepts, I recommend reading 3 basic books: "the personal mba", "the intelligent investor" and "accounting made easy".

The first (and most of these instant noodle mba books) will give you a quick overview on what constitutes a business. The second will discuss what is important in valuation of securities, common stock, preferred and bonds. The last book is so that you can make sense of the reports companies write about themselves each qtr.
