For Europe, this is my takes:
first time going to Europe, you have two choices.
1. Do all the biggy. Buy train pass and hope from London to Paris to Florence to Rome to Venice to Vienna, Salzburg, Munich... you got my idea? Just look at the map and draw your train line. each city 2-3 days.
2. Knowing that you will come to Europe many times. Do one country at a time.
Northern region will be more gentle aka UK, France, Germany
Southern is more exotic and you may want to wait until you had gone to the north and then next year/trip then go to south aka Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey
Once you had done these popular countries, then Eastern Europe will be my suggestion: Poland, Prague, Hungary, Croatia, Solvenia
If you are rich then instead of Eastern Europe, go for the Nordic country too: Norway, Sweden, Finland, Etc
Enjoy... the skies the limit...
A Life not Reflected is a Life not Worth Living.
