Reminds me of a proverb,

A Bird in Hand is Worth Two in the Bush

The Bird in Hand
The HDB flat providing reasonable certainty of $2500 p.m.

The Two in the Bush
1. $280k/$300k invested in dividend stocks @ 6% to get 1.4k/1.5k p.m
2. Remainder $400k (have to return to CPF?)

Ultimately, it'll depend on the level of certainty for the 'Two Birds in the Bush' to not only generate a higher return than 'The Bird in Hand', but also the ability to preserve that sum of $$. Further, if not well managed, the $400k (assuming not returned to CPF) may even result in conflicts with close ones, who somehow or rather, think that they are more deserving to either use it on your behalf or to get you to invest in some 'high return, low risk' scams....Rolleyes

The advice is realistic.

If really go for the "Two Birds in the Bush", incremental approach is always advisable. We probably don't know as much as we think we do, same applies to investing.
