Seems like DBS is taking the oil crisis head on by lending to local companies through its proceeds raised (e.g. recently raising 750 mil perpetual securities).
From Ausgroups latest financial statement, it was revealed that Ausgroup took a few short term loans with DBS. Similarly, DBS took over Krisenergy account from HSBC. It also seems DBS is a main lender of Hyflux too

Its going to be an interesting battle. Let's see how many of our local companies, backed by DBS, will survive this long downturn.

"Swiber Offshore India has appealed to the Bombay High Court to stop state-run Oil and Natural Gas Corporation from invoking a bank guarantee of $105 million (about Rs 700 crore) after the offshore construction and support services provider's Singapore-based parent ran into financial troubles...Huzefa Nasikwala, founder of Nasikwala Law Office, which is representing DBS, a bank that had issued the bank guarantee, refused to comment on the matter."

Wonder how many more bank guarantees are in place and if these are accounted for in DBS's exposure

What is happening at DBS? I went to two branches today and they were locked and shuttered. I can't find any notification of closure. I have been trying to get hold of my relationship manager, who is neither answering his phone or returning my message.

Soilbuild Biz REIT pointedly excluded applications through DBS ATMs for its current Rights issue.

Is it time to move my business elsewhere?

Seems more and more people are getting fearful and paranoid.

Would DBS collapse this time round? Or would it be like past crisis that DBS managed to survive and thrive?

Which company is deemed more likely to survive than DBS if there is an O&G crisis?

Is holding cash the way to go? If DBS collapse, would holding cash in Singapore dollars be equally dangerous? Which currency then should we hold?

Many questions to answer...

@ValueMushroom I can help answer some questions...

Collapse or not, Singapore is likely to survive quite well in any crisis. SG have high public debt but ZERO external debt, since it always balance the budget and get budget surplus. Compared to other country in this SEA region which can technically go bankrupt since they owe external debt which can cause a default.

Being local I'd rather hold SGD than any other currency in the asian region, I believe it will survive well relative to others. We are like the swiss bank for SEA now.

Go UOB and buy some gold loh standby if so scared (there is a reason why big shot like Soros buying into Gold related stuffs this year) but dun forget what buffett said, we should start become greedy when others are fearful Big Grin

Those company with strong balance sheet full of cash and assets will survive for sure Big Grin
