Singapore inflation up a 'more moderate' 5.5 per cent in Dec

Singapore's Consumer Price Index rose at a more moderate rate of 5.5 per cent in December compared to the previous year mainly due to a smaller increase in the cost of private road transport, the Ministry of Trade and Industry said.

The cost of private road transport rose at a slower pace of 12 per cent year-on-year compared to 14 per cent in the preceding month, as the increase in car COE premiums and petrol pump prices eased slightly.

For the whole of 2011, inflation was at an average of 5.2 per cent, the MTI added.

Inflation in 2012 is expected to average between 2.5 and 3.5 per cent, the Monetary Authority of Singapore added.
