@ksir - it is indeed an interesting exercise to think from the perspective of a potential bizness owner. I took the short cut of asking teacher Google for the comparison of the various offerings. Also looking fwd to Wildreamz's response hopefully. Smile

@ karlmarx - glad to see you posting again Smile. I happen to know a successful business which only has a basic website i.e. no ecommerce features but instead, leverage on ecommerce platforms for its sales e.g. Lazada/Shopee. In terms of digital presence, I believe it is critical to have a presence in major social/ecommerce platforms(preferably all) e.g. Instagram/FB/Youtube/Tik Tok coupled with ecommerce platforms(for sales and order fulfilment) + the Chinese equivalent of the various platforms. Thus, comparatively, I think having a website with ecommerce/fulfilment features is secondary, especially for small businesses.

Thanks dreamybear for the link. My BS-sense was turned on when I looked at the comparisons and 1 of them stood out very obviously different in terms of the pricing. I thought, maybe that is the main aim of the author because it is just so easy?

And it was completed when a pop-up appear to cajole one to sign up a Zyro account.  Big Grin

Back on Shopify. I think these folks got a wonderful product and they managed to answer that inner call in all our hearts to address the social injustice of Amazon - they are the anti thesis of Amazon!

But I just have the same queries like ksir. I am just not really sure of their TAM and eventually how big they can become.

..

But, must be my lack of biz sense, I can't seem to link back that with their value proposition or use case.
I tried imaging below use cases, pretending I were the business owner:
a) Starting a new physical store: Shopify has tremendous value for me, as it let me easily build up my sales platform (POS, payment etc) and they likely also throw me an online store.
b) Starting a new online store: Shopify is an option to me as well but I am also likely to just pick an eCommerce platform such as Shopee, Lazada, Amazon etc (considering where the traffics are).
c) Existing store owner: likely already have existing sales & payment systems, not very sure what is the value to attract them to switch over to Shopify.

In all use cases, I reckon the owner likely has no choice but to open an online store in 1 or many eCommerce platform, considering the traffics.
Hence, I can't really be sure what is the values of Shopify or why the business owner should open an online store using Shopify, because maintaining the store would need some resources as well.

Pretty sure my views still rather shallow and no deep dive done yet, hence would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks.

If you want a standalone online store, with the most features (due to their huge pool of app developer ecosystem, unlike Wix), with full backend support, lowest cost of maintenance (unlike truly ground-up, high code solution like Magento), and take-rate (unlike marketplace such as Shopee and Amazon), hence, highest gross margin. It's Shopify.

One of the more successful international brands in recent year from Singapore are SecretLab and Prism monitors right? Guess what's their online store is built with?

2. https://builtwith.com/detailed/prismplus.sg

Not just any 3rd party seller of China OEM products on Shopee/Lazada, but brands that are built to last and scale. Which platform would you think is preferred?

Not exactly the brand/website I have in mind (have my reasons for not disclosing) when writing the post, but here are some that I found in order to answer your question : https://www.nivea.com.au/; https://www.kao.com/sg/e-commerce/https://www.dettol.com.sg/https://www.panadol.com/en-sg/where-to-buy.html (ok, medicine may not be that relevant if one considers the need to buy only during emergency instead of stocking up for emergency) ;

There are links to ecommerce platforms instead of shopping cart. Hope it helps.
