Hi,

Anyone would like to share how they screen their stocks?

I'm using a excel file exported out from CIMB with all SGX counters, different ratios like ROA,ROE,NP margin,GP margin, some factual figures, 5Year Dividend Avg Yield, current dividend yield, debt ratio.

Then use the filter and sorting come out with a list of potential stocks.

I can't attach the excel file here.
It says the format is not supported.

I share how I do it here as shown in the attachment. (pls ignore the ticker's names, as some of the FA data are not updated.)

My excel list will update the price of the tickers from yahoo, so that the EV/Earning is updated. But I need to input FA data (at the right hand side of the list, which is not shown) for the EV, margin, D/E and ROE calculation, etc.

Then I will assign rank/tier for each factor based on the above results, i.e., 1 is the best ranking, bad ones can have a ranking of 12. I also assign numbers for auditor, buyback or directors buy/sell, etc, just to make it more objective, more quantitative. Then using all these data, I will put different weightage on different factors, and combine them together to a overall factor, which I can rank the list. The weightage system is not very logic, and is truly depends on one's personal preference. Initial fine-tuning is quite common. For myself I prefer value>margin>gearing.

Now there are 150+ tickers on the list (with a few of them delisted), updating all of them each quarter is a bit headache.Confused

Sorry to OT,

But will be very grateful if buddies share how they do qualitative screening.

Let me start first?

1) be wary of recurring acquisitions to fund growth

2) be careful of companies diversifying into non core businesses with no snergy of whatsoever, doesn't mean it will not work, maybe just need some track record? E.g micro- financing has nothing to do with ship building but YZJ doing fine, although it is still a controversial venture.

3) management pay vs payout to shareholder

4) clear milestones set and achieved in the business history, no it does not to be perfect
life goes in cycles, predictable yet uncontrollable; just like the markets, but markets give you a second chance

may i add
1) show a lot of "cash" but revenue is not increasing and paying pittance dividends yoy.
2)ask money by rights issue for "growth" or acquisition purpose one too many.
3)Net earnings falls far behind free cash flow

NB:
For me if a coy wants to cook the book even the professional auditors can't do much. Eg. World Com, Enron most of the S Chips, Blumont group, etc.... Really can we do more?
WB:-

1) Rule # 1, do not lose money.
2) Rule # 2, refer to # 1.
3) Not until you can manage your emotions, you can manage your money.

Truism of Investments.
A) Buying a security is buying RISK not Return
B) You can control RISK (to a certain level, hopefully only.) But definitely not the outcome of the Return.

NB:-
My signature is meant for psychoing myself. No offence to anyone. i am trying not to lose money unnecessary anymore.

Hi Baldric and all buddies,

i am new to this forum but not too new to value investing.

personally, i prefer to use Share Investment periodical. it contains all the companies on the SGX, with its price to BV, dividend yield, ROE, Margins, for some companies it shows their earning records for the last 4 years.

i use this as a filter, i thumb through this book and lookout for bargains.

then look at financials on SGX.

might not be the most effective way, but i think this gives me a chance to look at all the companies quickly.

Once again, "Hello Buddies!"

P/S: I personally find a paid-site will save you the time/effort, rather than doing yourself with excel. It works for both filtering and the later detail analysis.

I reckon any paid site should provide similar services. BTW, I am using shareinvestor.com
