I read between the line and I suppose I got what you mean.
Can I relate one of my story?
Once I was conducting a transformation workshop in THE largest telco office.
There was a glass panel.
correction, more like a glass wall.
It's the map of BKK.
Very details, very tall and it stretched all the way including the 'new' airport.
Being naive, I commented that this map is very up-to-date.
My host look at me with a 'un-believable' look (stare at me lar, may be this is the first time he seriously take a good look at me after one day together.)
He says bluntly to me, this map had been there for more than 20years.
I just kept quiet.
Later, I found out that the airport was conceived many many years ago.
Nothing happen all these years.
Until, finally, One man single handedly make it happen.

Kagemusha - roughly translated to Shadow Warrior is a movie by Akira Kurosawa, Japanese director extraordinaire. Very nice movie, encourage all to watch.... heheh.
To Corydorus - While I am not saying Sg does not support neighboring countries growing together, one does not know what measures others will do to ensure their own stakes are not compromise.
All countries are the same, guard you own interest first before others.
Do you not agree?

Same with our attitude to China when Singapore is a huge manufacturing base. We spread and support china manufacturing, and we move on.
If Thaksin has continued to be in power, our two countries would have been best of friends with tremendous cooperative potentials. With one willing to follow and learn.
Both are Business minded, itself aside to some. The Exchange rate would have reflected that
Thaksin is a great leader. But a power hungry one
Singapore bet on Thaksin. Might still be too early to say it is wrong bet
Win-win is a much more precaurious position for Singapore. If 2 kids have 3 sweets and 5 sweets respectively, and if there is a proposal to increase to 5 and 10 sweets, the first kid would object, even though he win as well. Forgot what the psychological phenomenon is called.
Win-win is also not a cure all. Politics can be quite complicated but forumers who look at management quality will understand it easier

As you said the world is not that simple. You do not get to choose one or another. Many times you have to do in parallel to be competitive.

The truly power hungry one overthere is surely not Thaksin what else can explain so many military coups against civilian governments ? Who is controlling this military ?

^^ Agree both are power hungry, but that does not excuse Thaksin's power desire of not working within constraints to improve the people's lives rather than his power base.

The idea of cutting a canal has been there for many years.
"A canal through the Kra Isthmus, which would shorten shipping times around Asia, was suggested as early as 1677."

Certainly our government do not view it as a significant threat if we can benefits from it by working together. Is in our interests because is much easier to execute what we can control which is ourselves psychologically.

Not sure he needs excuse. Is more like some folks feel threatened with a gov that people support.

I've been reading the papers a fair bit, it just makes me wonder this...... it seems that the point on buying rice from farmers always seems to be at the forefront of the issue..... why the yellow shirts don't just propose to do that and the Puea Thai party would lose one of its supporting policy...... anyone in the know?

the king from the beginning have always champion the cause of the poor masses by building roads into rural areas building schools, hospitals, he even turned his palace grounds into farm of sorts to experiment with different types of cash crops to see which suitable to grow to improve people's livelihoods.
until Thaksin came along with rice buying program and universal 30 baht medicare program that also greatly appeal to the poor.
Before thaksin no one has ever dare to compete with the king. Many see this as part of the problem. if anybody now tries to stop rice and medicare program they will lose support so nobody can take away these things now, they have to greatly exceed these thaksin programs but who can do that and why? nobody has ever cared for the rural poor in the past except the king.
