i have a strong feeling that HPL will do a rights issue soon. Rights are sometimes issued after a spectacular rise in share price.

why so?
It does not look like HPL in need of cash for anything.

It is only a guess.
Obs spent 6.97 million to buy 2200 lots around $3.16 (over 10 & 11 jan 2013) and honestly i think this price is not a bargain relative to the earnings, book value, ROE, etc. And to add on, HPL's property development also not doing well. And if obs is a smart businessman, i dont see why he would spend so much money to buy shares now. However, if i want to do a rights issue, i would prefer to have my shares trade at a high price

HPL share price has rallied recently to above $3.50. Wonder whether HPL is also considering establishing a REIT like what OUE is doing now.

OBS has super deep pockets - he is very seasoned and he belongs to the old timers that I believe he will stay old timer.
During the pre GFC, there was intensify talks that OBS, Wheelock and Simon Cheong will link up to redevelop the Hilton part of Orchard Road - very sexy story. Till today, Hilton remains Hilton and Wheelock stays Wheelock. Stock market is always very imaginative so must stay grounded. Pan Pac is a forgone story if one looks at the shareholding structure - just a matter of time and hence the small premium. Vested Odd Lots (11-05-2013, 05:11 PM)2V. The decision by OBS and Wheelock to form a 60/40 JV to assume control of HPL is a landmark.
Both are deep pocket players and hence $ is not a big problem given that bankers are more than willing to finance any future big redevelopments along the previously much touted stretch of Orchard Road. During the last GFC, HPL share price did soar to $6 and it is indicative of the hidden value there. Apart from the Orchard Road stretch where most analysts have the ability to crunch the numbers, HPL's worldwide hotel assets poses more difficulties for analysts to appreciate the value. In addition, I think HPL owns more assets along the stretch of Orchard Road and hence it has taken such a long time for both kingpins to come to an amicable resolution of their differences and how to share the cake. I will bet my $ with HPL and OBS given his excellent but long term process of unlocking values as seen in NSL.
