Trial of free MRT rides for early birds begins

SINGAPORE — The trial for free MRT rides for early birds started today (June 24).

Under the trial, commuters who exit at any of the 16 designated stations — mostly in the Central Business District — on weekdays before 7.45am will not have to pay for the MRT ride.

Believe the answer is simple and obvious ; increase more trains and frequencies !

It will take time, 3-6 months period is a reasonable time IMO.

The effectiveness of ERP on CBD traffic, didn't happen overnight too.

Need time to adjust. If companies start to offer more flexible working hours, like 8am-5pm instead of 9am-6pm, then I think the take-up rate will be higher.

There is a limit of the number of trains on the track. Putting too many trains reduce separation distance and speed of travel for the trains. With the above point in mind, I do not think increasing trains and frequencies would solve the problem. Commuters instead of waiting on the platform, would be stuck in the train for longer duration.

IMO, shifting demand either earlier or later would be a better solution. Just got to provide sufficient incentives for the commuters to do so.

They got to talk to companies in cbd adopt flexi hours wholeheartedly. Plus decentralise. Dun put everything in the city just because many elites stay nearby.

SMRT post a Q1 results. Profit drop 77% to 1.1c per share...
