Apple to begin iPhone trade-ins this month: Report

SAN FRANCISCO - Apple will start a programme this month to allow users to trade their older iPhones for the newest model, Bloomberg cited people familiar with the plan as saying, a first for the company as it prepares to introduce a new version of the smartphone.

It has teamed up with Brightstar, a mobile phone distributor that runs similar trade-in programmes for American carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile, to handle exchanges, Bloomberg cited the unidentified sources as saying yesterday (June 6).

Instead of attracting people by innovations, they are focusing on market technicalities.

I am more convinced that Apple's best days are over with Jobs and Ops guy Cook is a bad choice for a visionary, as per my previous posts

I agree, and i am sure the board aware, but talent is a scarce resource, especially a person like Jobs. Cook is the next best alternative IMO

Looking forward for surprises... I am using Samsung S4, an interesting phone, but most features are interesting tricks, few are useful in day-to-day usage IMO.

‘Apple to announce iOS revamp’

SAN FRANCISCO — Apple is preparing to unveil sweeping changes to the software powering iPhones and iPads, seeking to reignite desire for its products and blunt the advance of Google’s Android mobile operating ystem.

Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook will kick off Apple’s 24th annual developers conference in San Francisco today by unveiling a new version of iOS with a simpler user interface that will scrap design features such as simulated paper and faux-wood bookshelves, according to sources familiar with the plans.

It is a multi-billion $ question... Let me answer it indirectly...

Fidelity Contrafund, managed by Will Danoff, the largest active shareholder in Apple Inc, cut its stake by 12% in 1Q13, and further 9% in April, after expressing concern on competition.

At the same time, the official statement saying he still found the stock to be relatively cheap and remains upbeat about the company's cash generation prowess.

This is an answer from a fund manager managing US$100 billion for Fidelity, I don't think i can provide a better answer than his. Big Grin

IIRC, the technology stocks bought by Warren Buffett were IBM and Intel. He kept the IBM, and sold Intel shortly after.

Apple revamps iOS, unveils iTunes Radio

SAN FRANCISCO — On iOS 7, Apple’s latest version of its mobile operating system, an iPhone’s sensors and software will work in unison to create an illusion of depth as you view your smartphone’s homescreen from different angles.

The aforementioned feature might seem hardly functional but it is quite the visual delight to look at.

Another non-event.

Shareholders of Google and Microsoft must really be overjoyed.

Coming soon: The 5-inch iPhone?

SAN FRANCISCO — Apple is exploring launching iPhones with bigger screens, as well as cheaper models in a range of colours, over the next year, said four sources with knowledge of the matter, as it takes a cue from rival Samsung.

The moves, which are still under discussion, underscore how the California-based firm that once ruled the smartphone market is increasingly under threat from its aggressive South Korean competitor. Samsung has overtaken Apple in market share through the popularity of its bigger-screen Galaxy “phablets” and by flooding the market with a range of products at different prices.

Apple is looking at introducing at least two bigger iPhones next year — one with a 4.7-inch screen and one with a 5.7-inch screen — said the sources, including those in the supply chain in Asia. They said suppliers have been approached with plans for the larger screens, but noted it is still unclear whether Apple will actually launch its flagship product in the larger sizes.

“They constantly change product specifications almost to the final moment, so you’re not really sure whether this is the final prototype,” said one source with direct knowledge of the matter.

Apple declined to comment.
