A unique partnership. Will it work in large scale, in term of reliability and consistency?

Wal-Mart to test grocery delivery with Uber, Lyft
03 Jun 2016 14:07
[BENTONVILLE] Wal-Mart Stores Inc will partner with ride hailing services Uber and Lyft to trial online grocery deliveries, as it looks to speed up shipment times and better compete with rivals like Amazon.com, Inc.

The world's largest retailer said it would begin test deliveries within the next two weeks in Denver and Phoenix. Wal-Mart's warehouse unit Sams Club began a pilot in March with startup Deliv to dispatch groceries to business customers in Miami.

Improving delivery times is seen as a way to appeal to busy inner-city workers who do not own cars and for whom grocery trips are often limited to what they can carry home. Amazon already operates Prime Fresh, a same-day "fresh produce and grocery" delivery service.

Wal-Mart said it will charge customers a US$7 to US$10 delivery charge for its new delivery service, and will also alert customers when their order is being delivered.

Years after an anti-theft system was developed by Singapore-based firm Digital Safety (DiSa), United States retail giant Walmart is ready to take it for a spin.

It seems JD.com is leading in the grocery e-commerce competition, with the endorsement from Walmart...

Wal-Mart to sell China online unit to JD.com for a 5% stake

(June 20): Wal-Mart Stores Inc said on Monday it plans to sell its Chinese e-commerce business Yihaodian to Chinese online retailer JD.com Inc for a 5% equity stake in JD.com, a strategic alliance that aims to expand WalMart's reach in China to more customers.

Under the deal, JD.com will issue about 145 million new class A shares to Wal-Mart, worth about US$1.5 billion ($2 billion) at JD.com's current valuation.

You know, I always like to watch how Wal-Mart evolves and what makes for future growth. But I immediately remember that it has a very, very strong competitor. I think you know who I mean.

A smart move by Wal-mart, IMHO. NTUC FP should copy it, once proven in Singapore.

[NEW YORK] Want something from Wal-Mart? Employees may soon bring it right to your doorstep.

The company said on Thursday it was testing a programme under which store employees will deliver goods to consumers on their way home, as it competes for business with Amazon and other online retailers.

I believe it's the work of Marc Lore. Very interesting rivalry, Amazon and Walmart that is. I refuse to believe Amazon will win all of America's retail.

One more innovation from Wal-mart. The tool is useful to build the consumer trust. I can understand why pork in China, but why mango in US?

Blockchain seen as tool in food safety

[NEW YORK] The food industry is turning to the same technology used by virtual currencies to strengthen food safety and inventory management by tracking meats and crops from farm to table.Working with IBM, retail giant Wal-Mart Stores is testing the technology system on mangos in the United States and pork in China.Blockchain, the underlying technology behind virtual currency bitcoin, is a digital system that allows counter parties to transact using individual codes for goods."I see a lot of potential to create what I call a digital and transparent food system," said Wal-Mart food safety vice-president Frank Yiannas. The technology enables different parties in the supply chain to share details such as the date an animal was slaughtered or the weather conditions at harvest time.Data can be stored through a photograph on a smartphone that is transmitted onto a dedicated platform. The system also can also counter fraud and mistaken deliveries, champions of the technology say."The advantage of blockchain is that the ledger is immediately updated and all the parties have access to the latest information," said Bill Fearnley, Jr an expert at market intelligence firm IDC
