ONE of the biggest developments in Melbourne’s east is one step closer. Whitehorse Council has moved the massive $500 million, 950-home proposal for the former brickworks site in Burwood East to the next stage by deciding to put a development plan for the site out for public comment.
General manager city development Jeff Green said the development plan would be used to guide planning permit applications for each stage of the project.
The 14-day consultation period will be another chance for people to have their say on the Middleborough Rd development.
Frasers Property Australia has planned a 10,530sq m shopping centre and homes for 2000 people on the 20.5ha site.
Cr Sharon Ellis said that it was a “very, very exciting development”. “This development has stalled on a couple of occasions, but now it looks like it is roaring ahead,” Cr Ellis said.
“The community has been waiting for years for something to happen on that site. “Hopefully they take advantage of this opportunity and have their say on how they want to see it proceed,” she said.“No doubt they will, because of the enormity of this project.”
