Global PC shipments to fall 6.1% in 2014: IDC

SAN FRANCISCO – Global shipments of personal computers fell 9.8 per cent last year, the worst contraction on record, and are likely to decline by 6.1 per cent in 2014 due to lacklustre demand in developing countries, according to market research firm IDC.

IDC had expected PC shipments to fall 10.1 per cent last year but it said that the fourth quarter benefited from a slight boost as old computers running Microsoft’s XP operating system, which the software company is due to stop supporting in April, were replaced.

Intel says worst is over for battered PC industry

SAN FRANCISCO — Intel believes the worst is over for a personal computer industry hammered by the mobile revolution.

The Santa Clara, California chipmaker forecast third-quarter revenue above Wall Street’s expectations yesterday (July 15), sending its stock 4 per cent higher in extended trade.

Investors have pushed shares of PC mainstays Microsoft and Intel to decade-highs, partly on bets that the global slump in PC demand that began with Apple’s launch of the iPad four years ago is hitting bottom.

“PCs have stabilised,” Chief Financial Officer Stacy Smith told Reuters after Intel’s report. He said he expects shrinking demand from consumers in China and other developing countries to rebound, just as it recently has in the United States.

Adding to that, there is a new wave of potential customers who are going to upgrade their computers with the expiration of support of Windows XP, especially in the enterprise market.

I use PC>HP>tablet>laptop

The truth is that PC will always be cutting edge....

it is up to Intel, Microsoft to reinvent it ,eg motion sensors are in the works

So lets see how it goes......

Agreed. There should be waves of PC/Hybrid PC replacement with Expiration of XP. Pure tablet and Smartphone won't be able to replace them. Is different type of use.

As the processing get stronger in smartphone or tablet, maybe their cpu power can be tapped to bigger display and keyboard one day but is still many steps away.

Global PC shipments hit seven-year low: Analysts

SAN FRANCISCO — Worldwide personal computer (PC) shipments dropped 8.3 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2015, ending the year at fewer than 300 million units for the first time since 2008, said researcher Gartner.

PC manufacturers shipped 75.7 million machines in the fourth quarter compared with about 82.6 million a year earlier, Gartner said yesterday.

All told, manufacturers shipped a total of 288.7 million PCs last year, down 8 per cent from 2014, said Gartner. Analysts at International Data Corporation, using different methodology, put the total for the year at 276 million and the decline at 10.4 per cent.

Shipments have declined every year since a peak of more than 360 million in 2011, as more consumers turn to smartphones and tablets when they want to post on Twitter or send an email. Gartner forecasts a fall of 1 per cent in 2016, with the potential of a soft recovery later in the year.

I've not used a PC at home or in the office for the last five years.

For the office, everyone gets a laptop, but with a docking station, LCD monitor and normal full size keyboard. This replicates the usability offered by the traditional PC but confers flexibility as it is not uncommon to rush around for meetings and presentations. I think this is the situation happening in most offices, with the exception of administrative staff that do not need to leave their desks often.

As for homes, tablets and laptops are more common because usage patterns at home is more about consumption of content. Even gaming which requires a full "rig" is quite niche because of the prevalence of casual gaming.

Laptop is also one type of PC, right? 

Tablets and mobiles seems the new trend. People are mulling to replace "PC" with iPad Pro. Is MS Surface Pro a "PC" or not? Not very sure...

The main issue is Microsoft gives free Win 10 upgrades which in customer perspective is right as is just a combine of Win 7 and Win 8. This basically means no reason for hardware upgrade. And PC purchased last year or two is so fast, why would we need a faster PC to run word and excel or internet ?

The introduction of SSD hard drive means speed is not only increased but the PC performance able to maintain reasonable high after few years of use. The Disk Drive type of HDD will have bad sectors, fragmentation etc which pigeon hole their relevance to mainly in my backup.

What this all mean is PC is still needed, maybe just in different form or fit in worst case scenario.

Going to try on my old PC. Too slow for Win 10.
