i disagree
whats most important is whether they are good teachers or not.
the purpose of teaching is irrelevant. If they are money hungry people who charge crazy fees, but their teachings is good and worth the money, why not sign up for their course?

I think those ppl who are too lazy to read a book are not serious enough to commit their free time and effort to learning about investing. if they have money to invest, they should look to investing in unit trusts or managed funds by attending investment exhibitions.

Its usually those who have some basic experience in buying and selling buying shares and want to improve their results , will seriously look for seminars on what markets to buy and about timing their entry and exits. So the seminars will probably be focused on (1) fundamental analysis and interpretation of company accounts or (2) technical analysis based on charting or (3) day trading.

Its no use recommending beginners to spend $5K on a one week seminar course on technical analysis. Its better to pay small tuition fees for attending half day seminars and learn slowly.

I also have friends like this. I always suggest just go NLB and borrow. $1.55 per reservation and deliver to choice of your library for pickup.

For those who are lazy to read, I think really cannot help them. The bad thing about seminars is that they suggest the idea that paying a few thousand dollars over a weekend will make you good enough to huat till LS. Unfortunately, as any good investor on VB can tell them, successful investing is really about years of learning and hard work.

Oh but I must contradict myself and say that Vina Ip (aka Property Soul) is doing quite a good job at organizing seminars for property investment. They are cheaper (but not as cheap as I like) and offer sound advice from what I heard.

I too have friends who are interested in investing and they did ask me if those course are useful. What they teaches can be easily found on the web and in books but there are just some people who are plain lazy. Their rational for paying such a high premium instead of a few hundreds to gain equal knowledge is these course will have a speaker and there need only to use their ears and eyes to get the keypoints instead of reading through boring books which are few hundred pages. The course acts as a filter for them and they too get to ask question and if they are fortunate enough will get a correct answer instead of flipping through pages and trying to understand.

However if they are so lazy to even read a few hundred pages from a book how are they then going to read through annual reports backdated to a few years, find out about management, competition in the industry. A finally calculate the intrinsic value of a company.

In fact my favourite book has been The 5 Rules For Successful Stock Investing which I find it simple for anyone even non financial background person to understand. I have pass the book to a few friends but somehow the book never return to me as they are still reading it some of them are still 'reading' it for a few years citing reasons as not enough time or busy with other commitment thus have to buy another for myself.

At the end of the day if you are not willing to sacrifice time you will not be able to yield result. Thats the opportunity cost you have to sacrifice.

Honestly, I doubt anyone can give you an answer. I dont think anyone has attended enough courses/seminars to make a comparison. I must say, there are people whom are not so "intelligent" to just read a book and understand what investing is all about. They need to be taught. There are also others whom are lucky to have a mentor/ father/ friend to point them in the right direction on investing.

So, TS, if you really must recommend to your friend, then i think those courses/seminars at SGX is a good start. They have FA, TA & Day Trading too, i think. It may not be the best, but its cheap enough for your friends to get a start. And if after attending these and they are still interested, they should be able to find out other courses themselves.

Since they willing to pay thousands of dollars to attend seminars, why not you collect thousands of dollars from them, and start your own seminar just for them? Then they pay for your time, and you will be very sure that the seminar they will be attending will worth every of their cents.
