I chose to share the article here, since Breaktalk was highlighted by Tharman.

"kia si" is a way of life in home land, which is difficult to conquer. Let's hope the other way of life, "kia su" might help.

Culinary success needs ‘disruptive’ innovations: Tharman

SINGAPORE — For the Republic to become one of Asia’s top culinary capitals, restaurateurs and food manufacturers need to introduce major innovations — even seemingly “disruptive” ones — to edge out competitors and create new market segments in an increasingly crowded industry.

Singapore’s food industry has been growing well over the last five years, despite a challenging domestic environment, and it has good prospects in the years to come, Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said at the opening of BreadTalk Group’s new S$67-million international headquarters at Paya Lebar iPark.

But for Singapore to be a distinctive destination, the industry needs to make improvements.

“Some of this is about continuous, incremental improvements. However, we also need major or ‘disruptive’ innovations from time to time. In other words, innovations that displace existing players or cannibalise existing products even within your own firm, or innovations that create new market segments and customer demands that never existed before,” Mr Tharman said.

He cited Nestle’s Nespresso capsule as an example of a disruptive innovation, noting how the company was willing to cannibalise its existing instant coffee products to bring espresso coffee brewing into the home, one cup at a time.

He also highlighted BreadTalk as an example of significant innovation, noting how it created a new market segment by using R&D to produce “designer breads” with unique designs and flavours to earn a price premium.

I read about the article on Breadtalk this morning.

But honestly speaking, I would not pay a price premium for "designer breads". Breads are just breads for me. Would you?

In fact, sometimes, I find BreadTalk's breads a bit priced too high.

Ya. Breadtalk are fluffy. Not value for money.

Breadtalk breads are not priced that high; if one is to compare it relatively to other bakeries located in high traffic areas. I have "interviewed" my colleagues in why they buy breadtalk and four leaves as breakfast. The answer: it is one of the cheaper options for them to purchase on their way to work in the CBD area as compared to the other better known bakeries .

This suggests to me that breadtalk holds a combination of convenience, pricing and to an extent branding. This combination entices the young working adults to purchase their bread from them. (even though I would personally advocate just eating bread at home).

As to why I have avoided breadtalk as an investment , its balance sheet scares me

Personally I won't buy bread talk bread too. However, din tai fung seems to have a loyal group of followers. I m not sure if the toothpicks play a part though.
