Entered all my share related transaction and cost since 2008 up till now into an excel document and calculated the return using XIRR and got the result of 6.76%.

Is this return decent?

Note:
-Using closing price on Oct 6, 2016 to calculate liquidation amount for the current stock hold

As benchmark, STI long term performance is about the same, based on SPDR STI ETF performance, after factoring in the fee. I assume your portfolio is mainly SGX equities.

One should view in time frame context of performance measure. If STI has started on 2007 it may even go negative today.
Year 2002 is a low level till the run up to 2007. So comparison with STI has to be individual measured period.

That's true..

The 10 year performance of the STI ETF is only 4.36%. If we compare it on a shorter duration 1 yr and 3 yrs respectively, the STI returned -0.18% and 0.62%. Hence as investors gauging our performance, should take about the same time period to compare.

Another Area investor performance needs to consider is the weight-age. STI Index is kind of "weightless" in the sense is based mainly on initial sum input (with theoretical dividends re-invested) and we measure it till today. However a typical investor with increasing or saving income will have constant cash injection as the portfolio grows.

What this mean is for typically investor in weak market for this RECENT 3 years with constant FRESH CASH injection the weight-age will skew our returns significantly lower despite strong early 2000s year return. But the impact to STI is much lower as there aren't cash injection other than the dividends consideration in computing performance. In actual STI release its dividend about 3.x% bi-annually which is opposite to a typically long term investor injection.

So STI comparison needs to be very careful.

No. I do not have fixed instruments such as bond at the moment.

However, i do have a unit trust invested using CPF SA and Insurances with element of saving (investment), which i do not included in my calculation.

For the above calculation, i only considered share investment.

I would say that my current performance is largely due to some good luck, as i had somehow bought a couple of reit with good return when its price is low, such like First Reit, which i had sold out large proportiion for substantial good profit.

-.-"

But i do have very bad investment decision and lose some big money prior year 2008 as well.  Those are accounted in lump sum though.
